California Bike Laws


 

  • Always ride on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic. Drivers will not expect to see you if you are moving in the opposite direction. (CVC 21202)

  • Be visible! Riding without a headlight at night is a fine of $115. Wear white or brightly colored shirts and use a red rear taillight. (CVC 21201)

  • Do not ride a bike on a roadway without fully-functioning brakes. (CVC 21201)

  • Headphones and cell phones cause distraction and reduce your ability to hear traffic, which could cost you your life. Do not use any kind of headphones or a cell phone when riding a bike. (CVC 27007)

  • You must wear a helmet if you are under 18 years of age. (CVC 21212)
